Kratos is the protagonist of the God of War video game franchise. He first appeared in God of War in .
Born in Sparta, Kratos was a formidable warrior trained from a young age. He rose through the ranks of the Spartan army, becoming a respected general. In a desperate moment during a battle against a superior barbarian horde, Kratos pledged himself to Ares, the God of War, in exchange for victory. Ares granted him immense power and the Blades of Chaos, bound to his arms.
However, Ares tricked Kratos into slaughtering his own family. Consumed by grief and rage, Kratos renounced his servitude to Ares and sought vengeance. His journey of revenge against the Greek Gods forms the core of the initial God of War games.
Later in the series, Kratos journeys to the Norse realms, seeking a peaceful life. This period sees a shift in his character as he becomes a father figure to his son, Atreus, and grapples with his past while protecting Atreus and confronting the Norse Gods.
